Does the R36S Have WiFi? Which Models Do — and How to Connect Without a Dongle

Short answer: some do, some do not, and the listing you are looking at may not tell you honestly. This is the one specification people get wrong before buying — here is exactly which R36S models have built-in WiFi, what it unlocks, and why a USB dongle is a worse deal than it looks.
The direct answer
The original R36S has no WiFi. There is no radio inside it. No setting, no firmware update and no ArkOS option will produce one, and any listing claiming otherwise about a base unit is wrong.
Several newer R36S-family models do have WiFi built in. This is a hardware difference — a different board with a wireless chip on it — which is why the two versions are priced differently and why you cannot upgrade one into the other.
Marketplace sellers routinely copy the same photo set and feature list across both versions, so a base console gets advertised with NetPlay and online play in the bullet points. If WiFi matters to you, do not trust the bullets — confirm the exact model with the seller in writing before paying. This is the single most common cause of the disappointed messages we receive about consoles bought elsewhere.

Over-the-air firmware and emulator updates
Update ArkOS and RetroArch cores from the device. On a non-WiFi console every update means powering down, pulling the SD card, finding a card reader and a PC, and writing files — which is why most offline consoles quietly stay on whatever firmware they shipped with. This is the benefit people underestimate most.

Our honest answer, from what customers actually report back: yes for most people, and the reason is rarely NetPlay. It is updates. A console you can keep current stays good for years; a console that needs a card reader every time gets frozen in time within a month. If you are certain you will only ever play offline single-player and never touch firmware, the base model at ₹3,799 is a genuinely good buy and we will happily sell you one.
Can I add WiFi with a USB dongle?
Technically, sometimes. Practically, we do not recommend it, for four reasons:
- Compatibility is a lottery. Support depends on whether your firmware has a driver for that specific chipset. Plenty of dongles simply do nothing.
- It occupies the USB port on a device with one, and turns a pocket handheld into a handheld with something sticking out of it.
- Extra battery drain, on a console where runtime is already the main complaint.
- The maths does not work. By the time you have bought a dongle that actually works, you are close to the price gap between the base and WiFi models — for a worse result.
If online play or easy updates matter, buy the model that has the radio inside it. That is the whole reason the two versions exist.
How to tell which one you already own
- Boot the console and open the ArkOS Options or System Settings menu.
- Look for a WiFi or Network entry. If the option is absent, or present but shows no adapter and cannot scan for networks, you have a non-WiFi board.
- Check whether the network setting can actually see nearby networks — a menu entry alone proves nothing, since the firmware image is shared across both versions.
If you bought from a marketplace seller and the answer is "no radio" despite the listing promising online play, that is a misdescribed item, and worth raising with the platform.

Does the R36S have built-in WiFi?
The original base R36S does not — there is no wireless chip on the board. The HN-R36S-WiFi, HN-R36XX, R36S Plus and J36 Ultra all do have built-in WiFi.
Can I add WiFi to a non-WiFi R36S?
Only via a USB dongle, and compatibility depends entirely on the chipset and your firmware's drivers. It occupies the USB port, drains battery, and often costs enough that buying the WiFi model outright would have been better value.
