There is a whole category of R36S gaming that has nothing to do with emulation. PortMaster installs real PC games — Quake, Doom, Diablo, Jedi Knight, Cave Story — recompiled to run natively on the console's ARM chip. No emulator overhead, no ROM question, and on this hardware they often run better than the console games people buy the device for.

What PortMaster is, and why it is different

Emulation makes your R36S pretend to be a Super Nintendo. That pretending costs CPU — which is why demanding systems struggle on a Rockchip RK3326.

A port skips the pretending. The game's own source code is compiled for ARM Linux, so it runs directly on the console the way an app runs on your phone. PortMaster is the community project that packages hundreds of these ports and installs them for you with a single button press.

The practical result: games that would be impossible to emulate run smoothly, because they are not being emulated at all.

  3. Select a port and press install; it downloads and sets itself up
  4. Ports appear in the Ports section of your game list
  5. If the port needs game data, PortMaster tells you exactly which files to copy and where

The Jedi Knight games — Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy via the open-source engine — are the ones people specifically search for on this device, and they are playable, though they sit at the demanding end and benefit from the CPU overclock.

Isometric and 2D classics

The open-source Diablo engine is one of the standout experiences on this class of hardware — a full-fat PC RPG running properly on a 3.5-inch screen. Freeware and open-source platformers and metroidvanias like Cave Story are effectively free performance and belong on every R36S.

Puzzle, strategy and management games

Turn-based and low-intensity games are where a small screen and low clock speed simply do not matter. Open-source recreations of classic strategy and city-building engines run comfortably.

What to be sceptical about

  • Modern Unity games. Even when a port exists, the RK3326 usually cannot carry it.
  • Anything advertised with 3D lighting and effects from the mid-2000s onward.
  • Ports rated for higher-tier devices only. The rating exists for a reason.

Making ports run better

  • Enable the CPU overclock for the demanding 3D ports. This is one of the few places the extra clock is clearly worth the battery cost.
  • Leave the resolution at native. The screen is 640×480; rendering above it is pure waste.
  • Use a fast, genuine SD card. Ports load real game assets, and a slow counterfeit card shows up as stutter.
  • Remap the controls. Games designed for a keyboard and mouse need thought on a handheld — most ports expose a control config, and ten minutes there transforms the experience.
  • Watch your storage. PC game data is far larger than ROMs. A single port can be bigger than your entire 8-bit library.
