MinUI on the R36S: Boot Straight Into Your Games (Install Guide + Honest Trade-offs)

ArkOS gives you every option a retro handheld can have. MinUI gives you almost none — and for a lot of R36S owners that is the upgrade. Here is what MinUI is, what it deliberately throws away, how to get it onto an R36S, and how to decide honestly between the two.
What MinUI actually is
MinUI is a minimalist frontend built on a single idea: you turn the device on and you are playing. No themes, no shaders, no achievements, no scraping, no settings menu with forty-seven entries. A flat list of systems, a flat list of games, and a sleep function that puts you back exactly where you left off.
If that sounds like a downgrade, consider how you actually use a handheld. Most people load a console for fifteen minutes on a commute or in bed. ArkOS asks you to navigate a full desktop-class frontend to get there. MinUI removes the navigation entirely.
MinUI's original builds target other handhelds — the R36S is not on the upstream device list. R36S support comes from a community fork (the widely used one is MyMinUI), which packages MinUI for RK3326 devices like ours. That means two things: check the release notes for explicit R36S support before flashing, and expect the install steps to change between releases. Always follow the instructions in the release you actually downloaded rather than any guide — including this one — written months earlier.

What you give up — the part most guides skip
- PSP. If PlayStation Portable emulation is why you bought the console, MinUI is not for you. Stay on ArkOS and read our PSP performance guide instead.
- PortMaster. The native-ports library — Quake, Doom, DevilutionX and the rest — is an ArkOS-side feature. See PortMaster on the R36S.
- Box art and scraping. MinUI shows you filenames. If you want a shelf of cover art, you want EmulationStation.
- Per-game emulator tuning. Deep RetroArch configuration is exactly the complexity MinUI exists to delete.
- NetPlay. Online multiplayer on the WiFi model runs through RetroArch under ArkOS.
The R36S has two microSD slots and the operating system lives on the card in slot 1. Keep your ArkOS card, put MinUI on a second cheap card, and swap cards depending on what you feel like. Your games and saves can live on the slot 2 card either way. This is the single best reason to run the dual-card setup described in our setup guide.
Installing MinUI on an R36S
The flow is the same as any R36S firmware change — you are writing a new OS card, not modifying the console:
- Back up first. Copy your saves and save states off the existing card to your PC. Nothing in this process is designed to touch them, but firmware swaps are exactly when people lose progress.
- Get the current release. Download the newest R36S/RK3326 build from the fork's releases page and read its notes — the exact procedure varies by release.
- Prepare a card. Use a genuine SanDisk or Samsung microSD. Counterfeit cards are the number one cause of "the firmware won't boot" reports.
- Write the image or extract the files to the card exactly as the release instructs — some builds ship a full disk image to flash, others a file set to copy onto a formatted card.
- Put your ROMs in the folders MinUI expects, matching the names in the release documentation.
- Insert into slot 1 (the OS slot), power on, and you should land on the game list.
Nine times out of ten it is the card, not the build. Re-flash with a different genuine microSD before you conclude the release is broken. If the console boots to a black screen, put your original ArkOS card back in slot 1 — the console is fine, you have simply written a card it cannot read.

Our recommendation: if your library is NES through PS1 and you want the console to feel like a Game Boy, MinUI is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade and worth the second SD card. If PSP, Dreamcast, NetPlay or PortMaster matter to you, stay on ArkOS — and put your effort into performance tuning instead.

Does MinUI officially support the R36S?
Not upstream. The R36S runs MinUI through a community fork that packages it for RK3326 hardware. It works well, but you should always check that the specific release you are downloading lists R36S support.
Can MinUI run PSP games on the R36S?
No. PSP emulation on this hardware is an ArkOS feature. If PSP matters to you, MinUI is the wrong choice.
Will installing MinUI delete my games and saves?
MinUI is written to the OS card in slot 1. If you use the dual-card setup, your games and saves on the slot 2 card are untouched. Back up regardless before any firmware change.
Can I switch back to ArkOS?
Yes, instantly — keep your ArkOS card and swap it back into slot 1. Nothing on the console itself is modified by changing firmware cards.
Is MinUI faster than ArkOS?
The interface is dramatically faster to navigate and boot. Actual emulation speed is set by the RK3326 chip and is broadly similar — MinUI does not make games run faster, it makes getting to them faster.
