R36S WiFi Setup Guide: Connect ArkOS & Go Online (2026)
Share
WiFi turns the R36S from an offline emulator into a connected retro machine — OTA updates, game artwork scraping, Samba file transfer, cloud-style save workflows, and RetroArch NetPlay. This guide matches how Hobbyist Nirvana ships the console: ArkOS, honest model differences, and the exact menu path on our devices.
Which R36S Do You Have?
Setup differs by model. Use this table before you change any settings:
| Feature | HN-R36S (this base model) | HN-R36S-WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| WiFi | ❌ Not built-in — needs a USB WiFi dongle + OTG | ✅ Built-in — no dongle needed |
| RAM | Single channel | ✅ Dual channel |
| RetroArch NetPlay | Possible once a dongle is connected | ✅ Ready out of the box |
| Wireless / OTA updates | Manual via SD card (unless dongle added) | ✅ OTA from the device |
| Display / library | 3.5″ IPS · 64GB · 15,000+ games · ArkOS | Same |
Choose HN-R36S if you want the best offline value. Choose HN-R36S-WiFi if you want online multiplayer, dual-channel RAM, and wireless updates without extras.
What You’ll Need
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (SSID + password). Dual-band routers usually show separate 2.4 and 5 GHz names — pick 2.4.
- A charged console (or plugged into USB-C) so it doesn’t power off mid-setup.
- HN-R36S-WiFi: nothing else — WiFi is built in.
- Base HN-R36S: a compatible USB WiFi dongle (RTL8188EUS chipsets work well with ArkOS) and a USB-C OTG adapter (or OTG hub).
WiFi Setup on HN-R36S-WiFi (Built-in)
Hobbyist Nirvana’s WiFi model needs no dongle. From the ArkOS / EmulationStation home screen:
Step 1 — Open Network Settings
- Power on and wait until you see the main system carousel (NES, SNES, PS1, etc.).
- Press Start.
- Go to System Settings → Network Settings (on some ArkOS builds this appears as Options → WiFi).
- Enable WiFi if it is off. Give the adapter a few seconds to initialise.
Step 2 — Connect to Your Network
- Scan / refresh the network list.
- Select your 2.4 GHz SSID.
- Enter the password with the on-screen keyboard (D-pad to move, A to type). Watch capital letters and symbols.
- Confirm with OK / Connect.
When it works you’ll see a WiFi icon, a “Connected” status, or an IP address under system information.
1. Start → System Settings → Network Settings and enable WiFi.
2. Select your 2.4 GHz network, enter the password, and you’re online.
WiFi Setup on Base HN-R36S (USB Dongle)
The base HN-R36S has no internal WiFi module. Connectivity is optional and add-on based:
- Power the console off or leave it at the main menu.
- Plug a compatible USB WiFi dongle into the USB-C port using an OTG adapter (the same OTG cable included with many HN kits).
- Boot to the EmulationStation home screen.
- Follow the same ArkOS path as above: Start → System Settings → Network Settings → enable WiFi → join your 2.4 GHz network.
If Network / WiFi options never appear, the dongle is likely unsupported or not seated. Try another RTL8188EUS-class dongle, or upgrade to the HN-R36S-WiFi for a permanent built-in solution.
Confirm the Connection
After ArkOS says you’re connected, verify real internet access:
- Open System Information (or equivalent) and note the IP address (e.g.
192.168.1.105) — you’ll need it for SSH and Samba. - Try an OTA / online updater action if your build exposes one.
- Optional: scrape one piece of game artwork or open a network share (see below).
If the icon shows connected but nothing online works, jump to troubleshooting.
What WiFi Unlocks on ArkOS
| Feature | What you get |
|---|---|
| RetroArch NetPlay | Head-to-head classics with a friend anywhere (same ROM + core). |
| OTA / wireless updates | Update firmware and cores without pulling the SD card (WiFi model / dongle). |
| Game artwork scraping | Box art, descriptions, and previews for your library. |
| Themes & shaders | Download CRT shaders, bezels, and EmulationStation themes. |
| Samba / network share | Copy ROMs from a PC over WiFi — no card reader required. |
| SSH | Terminal access from your PC (default ArkOS user ark — change the password after first login). |

NetPlay: Quick Start After WiFi Works
On the HN-R36S-WiFi, NetPlay is pre-configured in RetroArch. Once online:
- Launch any multiplayer game in RetroArch.
- Go to Main Menu → Netplay → Start NetPlay Host.
- Share the session details with a friend — they join from their device with the exact same ROM.
NetPlay is strongest on 2-player SNES, GBA, PS1, and MAME titles (Street Fighter II, Tekken 3, Mario Kart-style racers, Mortal Kombat, Contra). Full walkthrough: R36S WiFi Multiplayer / NetPlay Guide.
Tips for a Stable Connection
- Stay in the same room as the router for the first connect.
- Prefer WPA2 (or simple WPA3). Enterprise / captive-portal WiFi often fails on handhelds.
- Pause large downloads or 4K streams on the same network during NetPlay.
- If signal is weak, try router channels 1, 6, or 11 on 2.4 GHz.
Troubleshooting
Network list is empty
- Confirm the router’s 2.4 GHz band is on and broadcasting.
- Move closer and rescan. Hide/show the SSID is rarely the issue — band is.
- Base model: reseat the dongle and OTG adapter.
Wrong password / won’t connect
- Retype carefully — on-screen keyboards hide caps easily.
- Temporarily test with a short WPA2 password, then change it back.
Connected icon, but no internet
- Restart the router and the R36S.
- Check whether phones on the same SSID have internet.
- Disable MAC filtering / parental controls blocking new devices.
Drops during NetPlay
- Reduce interference (microwaves, crowded channels).
- Both players should use the identical ROM dump and core.
- Local WiFi (same house) always feels better than long-distance internet play.
