If your R36S no longer lasts a train journey, the cell is the cheapest part of the console to fix — and on this device it is a plug-in swap, not a soldering job. Here is how to identify the battery you have, what the numbers printed on it mean, how to replace it safely, and what you should realistically expect afterwards.
Why R36S batteries fade
Nothing has gone wrong with your console. Lithium-ion cells lose capacity with every charge cycle, and small cells in warm climates lose it faster. Indian ambient temperatures, charging while playing, and leaving the console at 100% for weeks all accelerate it. After a year or two of regular use, a noticeably shorter session is the expected outcome, not a defect.
The good news is that this is one of the few genuinely user-serviceable parts of the device.
What the numbers on your battery mean
Pull the back cover and you will find a printed code on the cell wrapper — often something like 804068, sometimes with a manufacturer prefix such as CSD. This is not a model number in any meaningful sense; it is the cell's dimensions, and once you know the convention you can read any lithium pouch cell:

That is why searching the code turns up so many unrelated devices: any product using a cell of the same physical size shares it. What matters for a replacement is that the dimensions fit the compartment, the voltage is 3.7V nominal, and the connector matches the board. Capacity in mAh is the number you are trying to increase.
A cell with the right dimension code can still have the wrong connector, reversed polarity, or no protection circuit. Reversed polarity on a lithium pack is the one mistake in this whole process that can actually damage your console. Be clear-eyed about that first number: 3200 to 3500mAh is about a 10% capacity increase. The reason a swap feels dramatic is not the extra 300mAh — it is that you are replacing a degraded cell that may only be holding 70% of its original capacity. Replacing the battery, step by step
Power the console down completely — not sleep. Work on a clear, non-conductive surface. Use a plastic pry tool or guitar pick rather than a metal screwdriver against the shell. And if the old cell is swollen — puffed up, bowing the back cover, or the shell no longer closes flush — stop treating this as an upgrade. That is a safety issue: do not puncture or bend it, and replace it now.
- Power off fully. Hold the power button until the screen goes dark and stays dark.
- Remove both microSD cards. They sit in exposed slots and are easy to snap.
- Open the shell. Remove the rear screws, then work around the seam with a plastic tool, releasing the clips gradually rather than levering at one point.
- Locate the battery and its connector. It is the largest single component, wired to the board with a small two- or three-wire plug.
- Photograph the connector before touching it. Get the wire colours and orientation in frame. This thirty-second step is what prevents a reversed-polarity mistake later.
- Unplug gently. Pull the plug body, never the wires. If it resists, ease it side to side — do not yank.
- Lift the old cell out. It is often held with light adhesive; work slowly and evenly. Never fold, pierce or twist a lithium cell.
- Seat the new cell in the same orientation, with the wires routed exactly as the old ones were so nothing is pinched when the shell closes.
- Plug in, matching your photo. Confirm the orientation before it clicks home.
- Test before reassembly. With the shell still open, press power. If it boots, you are done; if not, re-check the connector rather than forcing the case shut.
- Close the shell evenly around the seam, refit the screws without over-tightening, and reinsert your SD cards.
- Charge to full before the first proper session, so the gauge calibrates against the new capacity.
Do not bin a lithium pack with household waste and do not leave it in a hot car. Tape over the connector to prevent a short and drop it at an e-waste collection point — most Indian cities have them, and many electronics retailers accept old cells.
Getting more from whatever battery you have
- Brightness is the biggest single drain after the CPU. Dropping to 50–60% is usually invisible indoors and buys real minutes.
- Turn the overclock off for 8-bit and 16-bit games. It does nothing for them and costs you runtime — see our overclocking guide.
- Avoid charging while playing where you can. Heat is what ages the cell.
- Do not store it at 100% or at 0% for long periods. Around half charge is kindest if the console is going in a drawer for a month.
- Use sleep, not idle. A console sitting on the menu is a console draining.

When the battery is not the problem
Two failure modes get misdiagnosed as a dead cell. If the console shuts down abruptly at a healthy charge percentage, that is often a loose connector or a worn cell that cannot hold voltage under load — a swap fixes it. But if it will not charge at all, suspect the cable and the USB-C port first: try a different cable and charger before opening anything. Ports collect pocket lint, and that costs nothing to check.
