How to Play N64 and PSP on R36S: Realistic Settings That Work

Let's start with the honest version, because most articles won't give it to you: the R36S is brilliant at everything up to PS1, and selective at N64 and PSP. Its Rockchip RK3326 chip (quad-core Cortex-A35 at ~1.5GHz with a Mali-G31 GPU) simply wasn't built for those two systems — but with the right settings, a surprising number of N64 and PSP games become genuinely playable, and some run great.

This guide covers the settings that actually matter, the games worth your time, the ones to skip — and something almost nobody talks about: thermal management, which matters more in Indian summers than any emulator toggle.

Before anything else: update your firmware. Stock builds ship with older emulator cores; a current ArkOS build alone fixes a lot of N64/PSP performance for free. Our ArkOS installation guide walks through it step by step without losing your games.

Set the foundation: performance mode

Both N64 and PSP need every bit of the chip. Before launching either:

  • Set the CPU governor to Performance for these systems. In ArkOS you can set this per-system (Options → Advanced) — leave lighter systems (GBA, SNES, PS1) on the default governor so they stay cool and sip battery, and reserve Performance for N64 and PSP only.
  • Close the WiFi (on the WiFi model) while playing heavy 3D games. The radio steals a little power and adds a little heat; N64 needs both.
  • Charge before, not during. Charging while running PSP is the fastest way to heat-soak the board (more on that below).

N64 on the R36S

The settings

  • Emulator: try the standalone Mupen64Plus first, and the RetroArch core (mupen64plus-next) second. On RK3326 devices the standalone is usually faster; the core has nicer save states. Set your preference per-game, not globally — some titles simply prefer one over the other.
  • Video plugin: Rice is the fast option and the right default on this chip. GLideN64 is more accurate (fixes broken textures in some games) but costs frames — switch to it only when a game looks visibly wrong under Rice.
  • Resolution: 320×240. Do not raise it. The R36S screen is 640×480; native N64 resolution upscaled looks completely fine on 3.5 inches, and every step above it costs frames you don't have.
  • Turn off enhancements. No texture filtering packs, no widescreen hacks, no anti-aliasing. Every one of them is paid for in framerate.
  • Audio: if a game stutters with crackling sound, allow frameskip of 1 before you touch anything else — on N64, consistent audio with an occasional skipped frame feels far better than perfect frames with broken audio.

PSP on the R36S

The settings (PPSSPP)

  • Backend: OpenGL. It's the stable, fast path on the Mali-G31.
  • Rendering resolution: 1x PSP. Same logic as N64 — the PSP's native 480×272 looks sharp on this screen, and 2x will halve your framerate in 3D games.
  • Frameskip: Auto (or 1). This is the single most effective toggle in PPSSPP on this hardware. Many "unplayable" games become smooth-feeling with auto frameskip.
  • Skip buffer effects: ON for speed — big framerate win, but it disables some post-processing effects and breaks visuals in a few games. If a game renders black or misses effects, turn it back OFF for that game.
  • Fast memory: ON. Multithreaded rendering: ON. I/O on thread: ON.
  • Turn OFF: anti-aliasing, texture upscaling, post-processing shaders — all of them.
  • Save per-game configs. PPSSPP lets you store settings per title — tune your heavy games individually instead of compromising globally.

What actually runs

The part nobody tells you: thermals

Here's a pattern almost every R36S owner eventually notices: an N64 or PSP game runs fine for the first 20–30 minutes, then starts dipping and stuttering with no settings changed. That's not the emulator — that's thermal throttling. The RK3326 is passively cooled (no fan), and when it can't shed heat through the shell, it protects itself by slowing down. In an Indian summer room at 35°C+, this happens noticeably faster than in the European reviews you've watched on YouTube.

Thermal tweaks that actually work

  • Use Performance governor only where you need it. Running the whole console on Performance 24/7 keeps the chip near its top clock, generating heat even in menus. Set it per-system for N64/PSP and leave everything else on the balanced default — the console stays cooler between sessions, so you start heavy games with headroom.
  • Take it out of the silicone case for long 3D sessions. A snug case is great in a bag, but it blankets the rear shell — which is exactly where the console dumps heat. Bare shell = measurably longer before throttling. (Store it in a hard carry case (₹499) instead, and play it naked.)
  • Don't charge while playing N64/PSP. Charging adds its own heat right next to the SoC. Combined with a heavy emulator on a hot day, it's the fastest route to throttle. Top up first, then play.
  • Mind the environment. Direct sunlight through a bus window, a pocket, or a bed/pillow (which blocks the back panel) all cook the console. A tabletop or open-hands grip keeps airflow across the rear shell.
  • Lower the brightness a notch. The backlight is a meaningful share of total heat and battery drain. On a 3.5" screen, 70% is hard to distinguish from 100% indoors.
  • Watch for the symptom, not a number. Sudden dips after a long stable session, plus a distinctly warm upper back panel, = throttling. Give it 5–10 minutes off (or switch to a GBA game) and performance comes right back.
  • Advanced (at your own risk): the modding community adds a small thermal pad or copper shim between the SoC and the rear shell, turning the shell into a heatsink. It works — the back gets warmer because heat is actually leaving the chip — but it means opening the console, so treat it as an enthusiast mod, not a first step.

The honest summary

Buy the R36S for NES-through-PS1, where it is flat-out excellent — and treat good N64/PSP performance as a bonus that rewards a little tuning. Set 320×240 with Rice for N64, 1x with auto frameskip for PPSSPP, keep the console cool, and you'll get dozens of genuinely great experiences from both systems — Mario 64, Mario Kart, Ocarina, Persona 3, FF Tactics, Ridge Racer — on a console that costs less than a single new AAA game.
